Shearwater, located One Shearwater Drive, is a recent residential masterpiece from the designers at Vibe Design Group in Melbourne, Australia. The team, in collaboration with modern specifiers, Icon Synergy, combined their decades of residential building experience to create the perfect coastal home.

The architects describe the dwelling as having, “An elemental palette of materials and finishes that will weather well, provides a stylish and hardy skin to the luxury within.” The neutral palette mimics its surroundings with a range of timber, white, black and stone.

Interestingly, the home features a steel sculpture by artist Russell Petherbridge, commissioned by the team at Vibe, especially for owners. Vibe often collaborates with local artists to incorporate their one-of-a-kind designs into their homes.

When describing their design for the home, the architects first mention the striking black addition, “Visitors are greeted by a totemic rectangular form clad in black Alucobond. It has function as a garage, but could just as easily is an abstract sculpture, a geometric outcrop on the coastal terrain. This welcome is indicative of a deliberately, ambiguous, understates entry.”

A customized walkway, utilizing the same materials seen in the home’s design, flows traffic inside to get a glimpse of the extraordinary views the architects envisioned. The interior space was also customized, in this case, especially for the owners’ needs, featuring an impressive bookshelf to house their expansive library.

The sophistication of the building materials is apparent in both the exterior and interior specifications. Furthering the use of that neutral color palette, the minimalistic interior pays homage to a “coastal villa,” and embraces the impressive views of Port Philip Bay on the sea-facing elevation.

We a re currently building a home in coastal Oregon. Our questions are, will this product withstand the Gail force winds of the Oregon coast. Also, will it withstand the corrosion of salt water and salt air.
