Sky’s Believe in Better Building is a four-story commercial office space by Arup Associates; reciprocate of the 2014 Wood in Architecture Award. The office and training facility was designed with community in mind and the promotion of improved well-being amongst users with flexible office spaces to enhance creativity.
The structure’s award-winning timber-frame was part of a low energy servicing strategy by Arup who states, “The sequestration of carbon in the frame creates a building that does beyond zero embodied carbon.” The building was created with sustainability as a core element and according to Arup, “It is the first building in the UK to be designed in accordance with the emerging Wellness Certification principles.”
In so doing, the building’s materials were carefully chosen to have a “natural material selection” in which materials with no or low VOC were specified. In addition to interior and exterior material evaluation, the design of the building focused on daylight and air quality, which accounts for the heavy use of exterior glass.
In the addition to the glass, the exterior is enveloped in Alucobond Sunrise Silver Metallic, fabricated by Sotech. Using sophisticated machinery, Sotech was able to specially fabricate custom length ACM panels and utilize their Optima FC secret fix rainscreen system.
Graham Todd, Technical Sales Manager at Sotech, states, “This was a fantastic project to work on; it was great to be involved in the panel for the building, and to be able to provide such a range of bespoke systems. We’re extremely proud of the finished project.”
