It is no easy task designing a home within lush surroundings. The contemporary design for the Woodland House by ALTUS Architecture + Design in Woodland, Minnesota utilizes a series of architectural techniques to blend and live harmoniously within the grass and tree-covered landscape it resides.

Ultimately modern in design, the home features floor to ceiling glass windows to take full advantage of its surroundings. The mid-century home uses warm wooden exterior accents to balance the landscape with pops of color to break up the space.

In an article in Contemporist magazine the editors describe the wood covered exterior stating, “The materials used on the exterior of the house are dark-stained cedar wood…the finish of the wood siding is intended to blend in with the surrounding color of the bark of the trees on the site.”

Most interestingly is the home’s mirrored addition. The corrugated reflective panels camouflage a storage facility coined the “shiny shed.” The mirrored material offers an interactive addition to the home reflecting and refracting light and passersby.
The single-story residence features three distinct wings that are clad in timber and are connected by glass entries that link them together.

The interior is sophisticated designed for a clutter-free environment with an emphasis on fine art and luxury. In true mid-century fashion, the interior is oriented around central open spaces where the bluestone fireplace, dining, living and kitchen areas all share a common space. The minimalistic interior is warm with white walls and timber accents throughout. The home features an impressive wine display where bottles are neatly organized in their own designated space.

To further take advantage of the beautiful surroundings, the living room opens to a covered patio.

The architects at ATLAS are renowned for modern residential design, often utilizing a single design element to transform a home into a destination. In this case, the home utilizes a variety of contemporary elements but it is the design of the mirrored addition that truly elevates the home.
