Highlights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Atomic Architectural Sheet Metal, Inc.<\/a>, of Vadnais Heights, Minn., began fabrication of the approximately 1,400 ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS panels in mid-July and completed installation with Atomic\u2019s dry-set system in late-November 2017. The hotel expansion celebrated its opening on Dec. 5, 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Wolf Towers features a seven-story north wing and an eight-story south wing with the upper floors offering scenic views of the Mississippi River and surrounding bluff s. All rooms feature upscale furnishings and upgraded amenities; the south wing\u2019s eighth story has a special all-suite floor<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the December 2017 opening of Wolf Towers \u2013 a new 185,000 square-foot two-tower hotel expansion \u2013 guests can experience premiere accommodations in the second largest hotel in Minnesota. The 306-room Wolf Towers\u2019 expansion brings the property total to 788 rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to premiere accommodations, the hotel expansion features a new color scheme in its fa\u00e7ade designed to create a \u201cmodern Miami feel,\u201d according to Gordon Strom, AIA, CID, senior project manager, RSP Architects <\/a>, headquartered in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur client was ready to go in a new direction,\u201d said Strom, referencing the property\u2019s original salmon-colored synthetic stucco fa\u00e7ade design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two-tower hotel addition is clad in a total of 15,400 square feet of 4mm ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS aluminum composite material (ACM) by 3A Composites USA installed in several vibrant colors as accents to the hotel\u2019s neutral brown-colored fiber cement cladding. ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS colors include: 3,900 square feet of Custom Magenta, 7,900 square feet of Bone White, 1,800 square feet of Anodic Clear, 800 square feet of Custom Nightfall and 1,000 square feet of Statuary Bronze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe property\u2019s existing fa\u00e7ade was very tired,\u201d said Strom. \u201cThe hotel expansion features a clean, crisp look incorporating neutrals with a splash of color. \u2026 The main portion of the hotel is clad in brown cement board combined with metal accents that include a magenta metal frame design. The striking curved prow stands out with white metal panels. We also utilized an abundance of glass. All of these design elements helped us to create a modern, timeless feel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since ALUCOBOND\u00ae was introduced more than 40 years ago, architects have turned to this ingenious patented product to create some of the world\u2019s most visually striking modern structures. ALUCOBOND\u00ae is specified by architects as high-tech metal cladding for buildings and is used to create custom design elements as well as corporate identity structures and signage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(ALUCOBOND PLUS consists of two sheets of 0.020\u201d aluminum thermobonded to a proprietary fire-resistant (FR) core and is manufactured in a standard 4mm thickness. ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS provides extraordinary flatness and rigidity, excellent formability, low weight and outstanding weather resistance. ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS wall panels have a flame-spread index of less than 25 and a smoke-developed index of less than 450 when tested in accordance with ASTM E 84, and have a Class A interior finish classification.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RSP Architects and Knutson Construction<\/a>, headquartered in Minneapolis, have partnered for more than two decades with Treasure Island Resort & Casino, which is owned and operated by the Prairie Island Indian Community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As described in an Indian Gaming Magazine editorial published in August 2017: \u201cThis trusted relationship and deep understanding of the campus has allowed RSP and Knutson to push the envelope \u2013 going above and beyond what one would expect in a traditional tribal casino. Their teams have modernized spaces across the campus, introducing more open and healthier environments throughout. These projects have significantly increased the casino\u2019s overall appeal, creating a world-class resort destination that is attracting a growing guest base.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located approximately 45 miles southeast of Minneapolis, design and construction of the Treasure Island Resort & Casino hotel expansion was targeted for completion prior to the city\u2019s hosting of the 2018 Super Bowl LII on Feb. 4 at U.S. Bank Stadium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe definitely hit the timeline,\u201d said Rick Schmidberger, project manager, Atomic Architectural Sheet Metal. \u201cColor wise, we hit the mark installing each ALUCOBOND\u00ae color in its own area. One of the most interesting features of the hotel is the big white radius element on the end of the building. When you\u2019re driving up to the resort and look over the crest, the first thing you see is the big white tower. And, as you drive around it, the magenta framing really pops. We\u2019re really proud to have been a part of this project.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe magenta ALUCOBOND\u00ae really stands out,\u201d said Chris Lyles, project manager, Knutson Construction, of the unique custom magenta color that will be included as part of the resort\u2019s standard color palette. \u201cIt adds a wow factor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wolf Towers is part of an approximately $66.5-million series of renovations and expansions at Treasure Island Resort & Casino, including a new non-smoking gaming floor and an updated lobby space that leads to a new bar and lounge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ALUCOBOND\u00ae ACM utilized in these projects was sold by EBP, LLC<\/a>, of Excelsior, Minn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most popular resort expansions was its first new project \u2013 The Lagoon \u2013 an approximately 25,000 square-foot waterpark that includes a 320-foot lazy river and slides for families, an adults-only pool and the only swim-up bar in Minnesota. The Lagoon also houses the new Wave Spa, a full-service salon and spa. Since opening in February 2016, The Lagoon significantly has increased demand for hotel rooms leading to the Wolf Towers\u2019 expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lagoon pavilion was clad in a total of 16,240 square feet of 4mm ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS ACM in three colors, including: 10,011 square feet of Bone White, 2,329 square feet of Alabaster and 3,900 square feet of Custom Cheerful Yellow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe wanted to create a design for The Lagoon that was much more dramatic and sculptural,\u201d said Ian Scott, LEED AP, who served as principal, RSP Architects, before his passing in December 2017. \u201cThe metal panels really helped us. The white color gave us a fresh change and clean break (from the property\u2019s original salmon-colored facade). The idea was to have one form with two identities that would angle up to the bluffs and river. We were able to utilize one material to create two sculptural shapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you look at the two colors of white panels from a certain angle, there\u2019s a subtle change in color. The yellow metal panels are more dramatic and provide the design with a pop in color that is complimentary but brighter than the white metal panels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fabrication<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Atomic Architectural Sheet Metal fabricated the ALUCOBOND\u00ae panels, creating a unique angular design that features returns ranging from 4 inches to 1 inch. After receiving project mockups in September 2015, Atomic completed installation of the ALUCOBOND\u00ae panels with the company\u2019s dry-set system in Feb. 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cALUCOBOND can be fabricated into any design you can imagine,\u201d said Knutson Constructions\u2019 Lyles. \u201cThis entire project was very fast-paced. The owners wanted to bring a new facet to the property and open it as soon as possible in order to attract an entirely new group of customers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lagoon quickly succeeded in attracting new guests \u2013 so much so that the resort decided to add another pool pavilion targeted to teenagers. Construction of the teen pool pavilion began in September 2016 \u2013 just seven months after The Lagoon\u2019s opening. The 4,850 square-foot teen pool pavilion opened in May 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe teen pavilion features the same sculptural design but in another direction,\u201d said Scott. \u201cWe had a set of mountains and just added another peak.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 4,850 square-foot teen pool pavilion is clad in a total of 5,823 square feet of 4mm ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS in two colors, including: 4,135 square feet of Bone White and 1,688 square feet of Alabaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specialty Systems, Inc.<\/a>, of Burnsville, Minn., fabricated and installed the ALUCOBOND\u00ae panels with the company\u2019s dry-joint system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe ALUCOBOND\u00ae was fabricated into uniquely shaped panels that included parallelograms and trapezoids,\u201d said Charles Holley, project manager, Specialty Systems. \u201cOur challenge was to lay out the panels to make sure they lined up correctly. We used CAD software to make sure the shop drawings were very specific about the colors to be installed. \u2026 Everyone was very happy with this project; we had only a minor punch list. The architect wanted to create a modern-looking design; ALUCOBOND\u00ae is a good reflection of that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
