We wanted to cause people to pause and stop. This pavilion is designed to get people inside. We looked at how flowers grow and how their petals overlap. We went through many iterations of this design to arrive at its final shape.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nTargeted to achieve LEED Gold certification, Perkins and Will chose to construct the pavilion with environmentally friendly materials, including formed timber, steel and ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS ACM. Recyclable ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS \u2013 which is manufactured with both post-manufacturing and post-consumer content \u2013 contributes LEED credits to building projects.\n\n<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\" style=\"font-size:14px\">(As the original \u201caluminum composite material,\u201d ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS has been developed exclusively to allow architects and designers to meet the fire performance requirements of today\u2019s building standards while using ACM as the material of choice. Consisting of two sheets of smooth .020\u201d aluminum thermo-bonded to a solid, fire retardant core, ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS offers the proven product properties such as flatness, form-ability, durability and ease of fabrication. ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS is manufactured in a standard 4mm thickness. ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS Spectra colors are transitional finishes which celebrate the natural color shifts that occur in materials that affect everyday life; the subtle nuances and color contrasts found readily in nature, the glowing luster and sheen in modern metals and the color shifts found in today&#8217;s luxury goods.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Design<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p> With the flower petal design agreed upon, building owners became involved in selecting the pavilion\u2019s color scheme. \u201cWe explored white, gray and silver,\u201d said Madkour. \u201cThen we explored yellow and red, which we knew would create a visible landmark in the city. The ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS in color-shifting Spectra helped to define the pavilion\u2019s curvilinear lines and offered depth within the shingles. To prove the complex design\u2019s structural engineering was achievable, Madkour traveled to the Autodesk Technology Center at its BUILD Space in Boston to create a prototype of curved nail laminated timber (NLT).&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Perkins and Will then collaborated with <a href=\"http:\/\/spearhead.ca\/company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spearhead Inc.<\/a>, a manufacturing company located in Nelson, British Columbia, that specializes in the design and fabrication of architectural timber and steel, to refine the structural design and improve efficiencies before the pavilion was ready for construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ledcor.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Ledcor Group of Companies<\/a>, based in Vancouver, British Columbia, served as general contractor for the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.keithpanel.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Keith Panel Systems Co. Ltd.<\/a> (KPS), of North Vancouver, British Columbia \u2013 which joined the project in a design-assist role in October 2016 \u2013 constructed a full-scale mockup to confirm that the company\u2019s custom-developed panel system would be able to manage the complex geometry of the pavilion\u2019s compound curves. The panel system consists of a series of overlapping ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS tiles that follow the building\u2019s curvilinear form at both roof and wall areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>KPS suggested ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS to clad the pavilion rather than taking a traditional roofing approach that might employ a light-gauge single-skin sheet metal that could result in surface undulation and a less refined appearance.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.alucobond.3acompositesusa.com\/2020\/06\/IMG_9095_2_opt.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6578\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cALUCOBOND PLUS was a good choice because it remains flat and true without oil-canning,\u201d said Carlo Gatti, business development manager, KPS. \u00a0\u201cALUCOBOND PLUS also offers inherent flexibility to achieve curved shapes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>KPS used Autodesk Revit modeling to determine the ideal size for the ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS tiles required to clad the pavilion to be 8 inches tall by 16 inches wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe identified early on that tiling the ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS in the right size tile was the most effective approach in handling the compound curve,\u201d said Gatti. \u201cWe then used our knowledge of effective rainscreen design to develop a wall assembly that would allow for a ventilated air space behind the tiles while mitigating moisture intrusion with a continuous liner immediately behind the tiles. This rainscreen panel system was custom developed for this project and had never been done before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Installation of 13,000 ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS tiles was completed onsite by KPS from June 2018 to December 2018. Building construction was completed in January 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>While Perkins and Will currently is working on interior design concepts for Nemesis Coffee, &nbsp;the \u201cRed Petal Pavilion\u201d continues to garner &nbsp;attention in the media and from the architectural community in the form of design awards, including earning the 2019 Metal Construction Association Chairman\u2019s Award for Overall Excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the retail pavilion\u2019s coffee shop is not scheduled to open until September 2020, residents already have been drawn to it. The pavilion has been included in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.curiocity.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Curiocity<\/a> online guide to \u201cThe 11 Coolest Buildings to See in Vancouver.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWalkers and bikers stop by,\u201d said Madkour. \u201cI expected a love-hate relationship with this building; but, we\u2019ve only seen a lot of love. People are excited about different architecture in the city.
