The building\u2019s nine-level public parking podium features a tumbled-brick look primarily on street-facing elevations while a total of 68,000 square feet of 4mm ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS in the custom Brushed Manhattan finish clads the seven-level office tower above. The building is split horizontally by an amenity level with a large wrap-around balcony that overlooks the Dallas skyline and separates the podium from the tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The unique double massing of The Stack was designed by Dallas-headquartered 5G Studio Collaborative LLC<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe lower building volume blends with Deep Ellum\u2019s historic neighborhood and shows respect for the neighborhood\u2019s history of brick and mortar architecture, while the upper building volume aesthetically expresses the goal of creating an innovative office model for the future with its modern aesthetic and visual prioritization of outdoor amenity spaces for the building\u2019s occupants,\u201d said Christine Robbins-Elrod, AIA, LEED AP BD+C | ND | Homes, WELL AP, GACP, and principal at 5G Studio Collaborative.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS metal panels \u201cvisually express a modern aesthetic for the building\u2019s upper volume while also tying to the industrial history of Deep Ellum,\u201d according to Robbins-Elrod.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Stack opened in May 2021 featuring 15,000 square feet of street-front retail space and nearly 200,000 square feet of state-of-the-art office space. This approximately $60-million multi-use project was developed as a joint venture between Houston-headquartered Hines<\/a>, Dallas-headquartered Westdale Real Estate Investment and Management<\/a> and Ivanhoe Cambridge Inc.<\/a>, of Montreal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen 5G Studio brought in the Brushed ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS material, we got excited,\u201d said Freisner. \u201cThere were still many color choices; but we were immediately intrigued by the sophistication of the ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS brushed finish and more importantly by the dynamic properties it possessed. We reviewed the ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS samples in all lighting situations from all angles; the product appearance changed each time. As we continued the process, it became clear that the fa\u00e7ade would reflect the district and most importantly our project. This building is dynamic. Businesspeople who work here by day transition to work out in the afternoon in our state-of-the-art fitness space, then entertain clients on our amenity level overlooking the city and leave to grab dinner and a drink at the many local businesses. As you approach Deep Ellum, each vantage point provides a unique experience, and our office does the same. We could not be happier with the result.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the decision was made to clad the tower in ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS in a brushed finish, Freisner said the team spent approximately three months reviewing \u201chundreds of color samples\u201d provided by 3A Composites USA before selecting custom Brushed Manhattan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe reviewed every color of ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS with a brushed finish before selecting Manhattan; it was just the perfect complement to our overall design thesis,\u201d said Freisner. \u201cWe were excited by this product and received great customer service throughout. We are very happy with our selection. \u2026 The dynamic characteristic of the Brushed Manhattan metal panels finalized our decision. Nothing about Deep Ellum or The Stack is static; we wanted to form your first impression of our project to know there is something special about calling this place home.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Fabrication and Installation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Construction of The Stack began in early 2020 with Baltimore-headquartered The Whiting-Turner Contracting Co.<\/a> serving as general contractor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

BakerTriangle Prefab<\/a>, of Richardson, Texas, was contracted to manage the metal scope of the project, including engineering and installation of the ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS metal panels in \u201cprefab\u201d construction units. BakerTriangle Prefab partnered with KSC, Inc.<\/a>, of Dallas, to fabricate approximately 2,000 ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS panels in multiple sizes for the prefab units as well as a unitized rainscreen installation system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis project required a lot of pre-planning; we spent a lot of hours in design,\u201d said Preston Pressley, president, BakerTriangle Prefab, whose company engineers utilized Revit BIM engineering and Autodesk design software to create shop drawings and detailing for The Stack. \u201cWe had to create an overlay between architectural drawings and shop drawings, aligning five different trades to correctly coordinate the details.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis was a very well-organized job with all of the trades on the building,\u201d said Vince Neault, business development manager, KSC, Inc., who said the company utilized three large CNC tables to cut the ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS. \u201cWe\u2019re known for our quality and service; and, with ALUCOBOND, quality and service are always there. The product has great name recognition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Installation of the ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS on The Stack in prefab units created major project efficiencies, according to Pressley, who said these units eliminated the need for field measurement and field cuts of panels during the process. The units arrived on site ready to be \u201cshaken out\u201d and installed by elevation, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS worked great; we didn\u2019t have any quality issues with these panels,\u201d said Pressley. \u201cThe Stack is a beautiful building that glistens on the skyline with a visible textured finish. We\u2019re proud that we got to play a part in drastically changing the skyline on the east side of Dallas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Established in 1873 as one of Dallas’ first commercial districts and residential neighborhoods for African-Americans and European immigrants, Deep Ellum is one of the most historically and culturally significant neighborhoods in the city, according to the Deep Ellum, Texas <\/a>website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Stack paid homage to the neighborhood\u2019s thriving visual arts scene by commissioning American street artist Tristan Eaton<\/a> in collaboration with Goldman Global Arts<\/a> to create a massive \u201cModern Cowgirl\u201d mural for the building as well as local artists in collaboration with The Deep Ellum Foundation<\/a> to decorate an alleyway with a series of united murals recognizing the area\u2019s blues music tradition. A dynamic LED lighting system allows The Stack\u2019s fa\u00e7ade lighting to be changed in support of local sports teams and causes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe always set out to do more than build a building; we want to create spaces that help people flourish,\u201d said Freisner. \u201cThe Stack\u2019s art, architecture and finish selections all contribute to human flourishing. \u2026 This project not only fulfilled but exceeded our hopes from concept to reality. We could not have hit such a high bar of excellence without the custom ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS Brushed Manhattan finish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Stack is pursuing LEED Gold Certification and is one of the first new construction projects in Dallas to receive WELL Certification. ALUCOBOND\u00ae PLUS panels contribute to LEED materials and resources credits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
