The singular focus of Painted Rock Estate Winery<\/a>, according to proprietor John Skinner, had been \u201call about the wine\u201d since he and his family purchased this 60-acre property overlooking the eastern shore of Skaha Lake in Penticton, British Columbia, in 2004. That single-minded emphasis has produced extraordinary results for this young winery \u2013 most recently named \u201cWinery of the Year\u201d in British Columbia in the 2013 InterVin International Wine Awards, which awarded gold medals for Painted Rock\u2019s 2010 Cabernet and 2010 Syrah wines.<\/p>\n

With numerous accolades for Painted Rock\u2019s wines accumulated, Skinner decided in 2013 that it was time to focus on his plan to develop the estate as a wine-tasting and entertainment destination. The new 1,600 square-foot one-story Painted Rock Estate Winery Tasting Room \u2013 which opened in September 2013 \u2013 was designed not only to accommodate on-site retail wine-tastings and sales but as a unique destination site for weddings, banquets and corporate events.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to build something that was worthy of the site,\u201d said Skinner. \u201cPreviously, we reinforced the message in the community that we were all about the wine. We wanted to honor consumers and the Painted Rock community. \u2026 We chose a contemporary building design \u2013 but one that seems in place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Skinner has described the view from the new tasting room \u2013 which is situated atop a picturesque bluff overlooking the vineyards and Skaha Lake with vistas of nearby mountains \u2013 as \u201cone of the most beautiful views in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dominic Unsworth, architectural designer, Fallowfield Design + Development, of Kaleden, British Columbia, in association with Penticton-based Robert Mackenzie Architect Inc., created a sleekly contemporary building design for the Painted Rock Estate Winery Tasting Room that makes the most of the natural view while honoring the brand\u2019s upscale marketing approach.<\/p>\n

\"Alucobond<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to create a new benchmark for the property,\u201d said Unsworth. \u201cThe building approach curtains the view to Skaha Lake and the vineyards to the west. The eastern walls draw you into the entry and forward to the view beyond. It\u2019s a flowing form on the site and works nicely against the natural setting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cladding this contemporary building design is a total of 2,400 square feet of modern ALUCOBOND\u00ae aluminum composite material (ACM) in the 4mm thickness, including 1,800 square feet of ALUCOBOND\u00ae in the Seafoam Metallic color and 600 square feet of ALUCOBOND\u00ae naturAL in the Reflect finish.<\/p>\n

The ALUCOBOND\u00ae panels were fabricated by Keith Panel Systems Co. Ltd. (KPS)<\/a>, of Vancouver, British Columbia, and installed by Laing Roofing Ltd., of Kelowna, British Columbia, with the KPS System A Plus pressure-equalized rainscreen. Penticton-based Greyback Construction Ltd. served as general contractor for the project.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith ALUCOBOND, we were able to get outstanding material tolerances,\u201d said Unsworth. \u201cKPS managers were confident that this product was suitable for this cladding application.\u201d<\/p>\n

Formable ALUCOBOND\u00ae ACM played a vital role in creating the tasting room\u2019s flowing form not only by accommodating the design\u2019s radius curves but through its surface color.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bluish (Seafoam Metallic) ALUCOBOND\u00ae material features a luster that seems to change as the natural light changes,\u201d said Skinner. \u201cFrom bright sunny days to dark hazy days, the building\u2019s appearance evolves profoundly. One day, it\u2019s one building; the next day, it\u2019s another. We\u2019re very excited about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ALUCOBOND\u00ae Reflect finish was used to accent two building wing areas with a mirror-like finish that reflects the area\u2019s natural beauty. Guests can enjoy these views in the cladding as they walk to and from the tasting room and its open patio areas to the winery\u2019s landscaped event lawn.<\/p>\n

\"Alucobond<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThe building wings are tipped with this mirrored surface that reflects the moonrise in the east and the sunset in the west,\u201d said Unsworth. \u201cIn daylight conditions, it changes nicely and picks up a lot of the naturally-lit surroundings. There are fantastic views of the lake as well as the hills and mountains visible in this cladding.\u201d<\/p>\n

For long-time ALUCOBOND\u00ae fabricator KPS, the Painted Rock Estate Winery Tasting Room construction project marked the company\u2019s first fabrication of ALUCOBOND\u00ae naturAL Reflect.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were very impressed with the consistency of the Reflect panel surface,\u201d said Paul Dalzell, KPS operations manager. \u201cWe know how difficult it can be to work with mirror-finish products from past experience; but, ALUCOBOND\u00ae Reflect was extremely easy to fabricate and produced great results.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Alucobond<\/a><\/p>\n

Dalzell believes that the ALUCOBOND\u00ae naturAL Reflect material will prove valuable in future KPS projects, including creating accent column covers featuring a flat mirror-like surface.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Reflect material will have a big impact \u2013 especially in our niche markets \u2013 because it offers the versatility and economy of ALUCOBOND\u00ae with a mirrored finish. Previously, you\u2019d have to use expensive, heavy-gauge stainless steel to get this type of effect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Incorporating the ALUCOBOND\u00ae naturAL Reflect in the tasting room\u2019s cladding was one of the reasons that this contemporary building design was selected for Painted Rock Estate Winery.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ALUCOBOND\u00ae and the Reflect materials were suggested for this building design,\u201d said Skinner. \u201cIn our context, it really works. It\u2019s beautiful. This material brings the glorious natural periphery \u2013 including the lake and the mountains \u2013 into the building. \u2026 This building is really striking. We\u2019ve seen the immediate appeal that it has with people journeying to the grounds. It\u2019s wonderfully appropriate for this site.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t\t
